Due to the tough economic times and heavy budget cuts, California court rooms are feeling pressure to keep their costs down. As such, Whittier Law School in Orange County is offering its recently built $2 million practice court room as a venue for legitimate legal proceeedings. The Whittier campus will now be hosting trials and arbitration hearings.

Orange County Supervisors Voice Formal Opposition to Fire Ring Ban

The Orange County Board of Supervisors has weighed in on the ongoing debate over beach bonfires, opting to oppose a region-wide ban on fire rings in a unanimous vote on Tuesday. The board is now urging the South Coast Air Quality Management District (AMQD) to drop its proposal, which would extinguish the redolent fire pits across Los Angeles and Orange County beaches. Instead, the board is hoping for a more pragmatic approach, which takes community-specific factors—such as proximity to residents—into consideration.

Judge Orders Retrial in Civil Case Against Fresno CPS

A superior court judge has demanded a retrial in the civil case related to Seth Ireland, a 10-year-old boy who was killed four years ago by his mother’s boyfriend Lebaron Vaughn. In February, a jury found Fresno County partially responsible for Ireland’s death, as Child Protective Services (CPS) had allowed the boy to remain in the home despite evidence of prior abuse.

Santa Clara County Officials Order DA to Stop Giving as Much Paid Administrative Leave

We reported the other day on the issues surrounding Santa Clara County District Attorney Jeff Rosen’s decision to give his employees time off. County Officials ruled that the amount of time off Rosen was giving his employees was “irregular and excessive,” and ordered him to immediately cease giving extra time off to his employees.

Attorneys Union Accuses Santa Clara County DA of Committing Violation

A union of attorneys in Santa Clara County sent a an email blast last week accusing District Attorney Jeff Rosen of misusing public funds. Which, if true, would be considered both a serious violation and a crime. The email claims that Rosen gave public funds to 15 of his supervising deputy district attorneys as a gift, however the email only claimed that Rosen “may have” committed this violation. Rosen has made a statement regarding the accusation, saying that he acted well within his authority by giving his supervising attorneys time off in order to make up for a recent county pay cut.

Madera Drops Lawsuit Against High Speed Rail Authority

On Tuesday, the Madera County Board of Supervisors voted 3 to 2 to drop the county’s lawsuit against the California High-Speed Rail Authority (CHSRA), which oversees the implementation of the $68 billion bullet train slated for California. The County of Madera was one of 6 parties filing a lawsuit against the CHSRA in 2012 in relation to the Merced-Fresno portion of the project. They claim that the agency’s environmental assessments were inept and that the project would, in fact, cause significant harm to the area.

San Francisco Supervisors Clash with Public Defender Jeff Adachi

Last week’s Board of Supervisors Budget Committee in San Francisco saw its share of drama as a Supervisor clashed with a Public Defender. They argued over a $750,000 supplemental that Supervisor David Campos intended to be used in Public Defender Jeff Adachi’s office. Adachi stated earlier that he could not afford to pay his existing staff, but some claim that he was acting recklessly, and is looking for money to cover hires that were he was not intended to make.

Late last week, a verdict was reached in a civil case against Fresno CPS, in which the agency was deemed 65% responsible for the death of 10 year-old Seth Ireland who was killed four years ago at the hands of his mother’s boyfriend Lebaron Vaughn.

State vs. County: Orange County’s Property Tax Dispute Heads to Court

It’s been a year since we told you about Orange County’s decision to withhold millions of dollars in property taxes from the state and now the dispute is headed to court. While California already has some of the toughest guns laws in the nation, several state legislators and local governments are looking at steps to further regulate guns. For instance, the Chronicle reports that “Assemblywoman Nancy Skinner, D-Berkeley, has authored legislation that would require ammunition buyers to provide identification and undergo a background check, and force sellers to apply for a state license and report all transactions to California authorities.”
