Stanislaus County supervisors could restore pay cut, increase wages for 1,700 workers

Stanislaus County leaders are poised to restore a pay cut and increase salaries above and beyond the original cut in a proposed contract with the county’s largest union.

The four-year contract with the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees Local 10, which represents more than half of the county’s workforce, is slated for approval Tuesday.  The board is expected to adopt the proposal.

The new contract would restore wages for more than 1,700 workers in public works, parks, the Community Services Agency, Health Services Agency, Behavioral Health and Recovery Services and other departments.

The 5-6% cuts were adopted in 2010 in a deal with county employees to help Stanislaus weather the financial crisis. Employees were given extended leave time in exchange for the salary reductions.

The county has been restoring the pay in recent negotiations with union groups.

The proposed contract with AFSCME Local 10 would restore 80 percent of the salary cut in November and the remainder in July, according to the Modesto Bee. In addition, the agreement would give workers a 1 percent raise in July 2016 and 3 percent salary increase in July 2017. The union members have ratified the proposed contract, which runs from July 1, 2014, to June 30, 2018.

The new contract would cost the county $21.3 million over four years, including about $4 million from the general fund
