Former OC Sheriff Mike Carona Gets Early Prison Release

Former Orange County Sheriff Mike Carona was released from a federal prison in Lexington, KY on Wednesday after serving 52 months of a 66-month sentence for felony witness tampering. The former top cop will be spending the remainder of his sentence in home confinement due to good behavior, having already spent time at a Southern California halfway house.

Carona was convicted in 2009 as part of a federal corruption probe and began serving his sentence in 2011. His fall from grace was particularly galling, as Carona was widely considered to be a rising star in California politics at the time.

Until recently, Carona was serving his sentence at a federal prison in Littleton, CO. He was transferred to Kentucky after experiencing complications from a previous back and hip injury that occurred in an on-duty car accident in 2005.

The former sheriff’s official release is scheduled for Nov. 8.
