Santa Barbara County Fire Agencies Hitting “Drawdown” Staff Levels

With fire season in full swing, drawdown policy shows how thin agencies can be stretched.

But once an agency hits drawdown, crews can no longer be sent abroad.

Santa Barbara crews have been sent up north to help fight fires like the now mostly contained Rocky Fire.

Nearby San Luis Obispo County is near drawdown, but in slightly better shape.

The ongoing drought coupled with the normal fire season means prime fire conditions. This translates into agencies likely remaining near drawdown for the rest of fire season.

Overall, there are over a dozen active fires across the state and over 10,000 firefighters trying to quench the flames.
