Calaveras and Lake County Receiving Federal Funds in Wake of Fires

The two counties endured the Butte and Valley Fires respectively.

Both fires scorched over 70,000 acres and destroyed numerous properties and buildings. The Valley Fire had damaged or destroyed over 2,000 buildings and the Butte Fire totaled over 800. CalFire data shows that both fires are nearing complete containment at the time of writing.

In a pair of announcements made last week, President Obama made disaster declarations for both Calaveras and Lake County, making FEMA aid available for residents to rebuild properties lost in the fires. The decisions came at the request of Governor Jerry Brown.

Four people were killed as a result of Lake County’s Valley Fire, while the Butte Fire in Calaveras County killed two.
