L.A. County Jails Closed to Visitors After Inmate Escape

Friends and family of Los Angeles County Jail inmates were temporarily barred from visiting their loved ones over the weekend after an inmate escaped from the Men’s Central Jail in Downtown Los Angeles.

The unidentified inmate fled the facility shortly after 2 p.m. on Friday following an assault on sheriff’s deputies that caused minor bodily harm. He was later apprehended near Rosabell and Vignes streets and taken to a hospital for minor injuries suffered during a fall.

All three of the department’s jails were closed while officials reviewed security practices in the jails’ visiting areas.

"It's not necessarily a lockdown," sheriff's Deputy Trina Schrader told City News Service. "They just want to make sure this doesn't happen again."
