Los Angeles Coroner, Authorities On the Hunt for Stolen Leg

Los Angeles authorities are investigating the recent theft of a human leg from a vehicle belonging to a nonprofit organ and tissue donation organization that works with the coroner’s office.

The donated limb was stolen during the early morning hours last week while the drivers of the van were getting something to eat in downtown Los Angeles.

Los Angeles County Medical Examiner-Coroner Mark Fajardo said he believes the thieves were unaware that the cooler they stole from the van contained a human leg. The family of the donor has since been notified, but confidentiality laws prevent the coroner from releasing any information about him or her to the public.

As the investigation proceeds, the coroner’s office is also looking into the possibility that a staff member leaked details about the theft to the press.

"As it stands today, we do not know who 'leaked' the information, but it appears at face value to be one of my employees," Fajardo wrote in a letter to the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors.
