San Benito County Supervisors Approve $16 Million Jail Expansion Project

The San Benito County Board of Supervisors unanimously approved a massive jail expansion project Tuesday calling for the construction of a 24,000 medium-security facility on county property in Hollister. The new jail is scheduled to open between May 30 and Aug. 25, 2017 and will contain an estimated 72 beds, along with a housing, medical, custody and administrative area. The new facility will still depend on the existing jail for some core services like food and laundry, however.

The $16 million project will largely be funded through California's AB 900, which allotted $1.2 billion for county jail construction in California. The state will provide funds of up to $15,053,000, with another $15,856,000 financed by the county.
