SD County Deputies’ Union Boss Steps Down Over Spending Investigation

President Matt Clay’s spending was “outside the standing rules.”

Clay resigned from his position as President of the Deputy Sheriffs’ Association.

Minutes from the association’s Septemeber 10th meeting mention “an issue relating to following the rules and verifying expenses when approving the credit card payments.” Use of association credit cards will require special approval for everything beyond gas and car-related expenses going forward.

The association elected Deputy Gary Moore as President.

“I want to assure you that protecting the members' assets and resources are of paramount importance to each of us,” Moore said in a newsletter. “We take our stewardship of those resources to be a solemn duty.”

Clay does remain employed as a deputy.
