Mother of Abandoned Infant Arrested in L.A. County

Authorities have arrested the mother of a newborn baby who was rescued by Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies after being buried alive near a bike path in Compton.

Porche Laronda Washington, 33, has been charged with attempted murder and child abuse. According to investigators, she was identified as the mother thanks to a piece of cloth found at the scene.

Sheriff’s officials say the baby was born on Nov. 23 and abandoned the following morning. The infant was discovered after two passersby heard the faint sounds of a baby cry and called authorities. On Tuesday, the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors honored the two deputies, Adam Collette and David Perry, who are credited with saving her life.

Los Angeles County already has a “Baby Safe Surrender Program” to prevent these types of incidents. It allows parents to relinquish their children at any L.A. County hospital or fire station, no questions asked. So far this year, 16 infants have been surrendered under the program.
