Widow of San Bernardino Shooting Victim Seeking $58 Million in Damages From County
The wife of one of the shooting victims killed in San Bernardino’s December terrorist attack has filed claims for damages against the county totaling $58 million.
Renee Wetzel alleges that negligence and a series of wrongful actions on the part of county officials contributed to the death of her husband Michael. She is now seeking $3 million in lost wages and $25 million in general damages along with $10 million for each of their three children.
County Spokesman David Wert said the claims are still being evaluated. If rejected, that will pave the way for a lawsuit against the county.
Wetzel’s claims are not the only legal challenge to arise out of last month’s massacre. San Bernardino City Councilman John Valdivia said he believes at least 6 claims have been filed by individuals whose property was damaged by the ensuing shootout with police. Valdivia is now conferring with city and county heads to determine the best way to evaluate such claims and ensure that property damage victims are properly reimbursed.
