Arambula Avoids Runoff in AD 31 Special

Meet your newest legislator: Assemblyman Joaquin Arambula.

That's Doctor Assemblyman Arambula, if you're getting technical. Arambula, a Democrat, is an Emergency room physician who is the son of former legislator Juan Arambula, who represented a similar District prior to redistricting. We believe Joaquin is the first Emergency Room Doc in the legislature, though he joins other medical professionals including Senator Pan (Pediatrician) and Ed Hernandez (Optometrist).

Arambula beat Fresno Councilman Clint Oliver, a Republican, as well as another minor contender to beat the 50% threshold and avoid a runoff for the seat. "Tomorrow is a new day,” Arambula was quoted in the Fresno Bee. “I’m excited to head to Sacramento and be a representative for the Valley. I truly intend to be a public servant. Someone who listens more than I talk, and I’m excited about the possibilities for where we can go.”

The seat, vacated by Henry Perea (now a pharmaceutical industry lobbyist), was hotly contested by Republican and Democrat party leaders, and newly minted Speaker Anthony Rendon was reportedly on hand at Arambula's victory party in Fresno last night.
