Ventura County Medical Examiner Stepping Down After Less Than a Year

Dr. Ann Bucholtz has resigned from her role as medical examiner for Ventura County ten months after her hiring and without much explanation. County officials announced her departure Wednesday, effective Sept. 30.

“It was a surprise,” said Barry Fisher, who heads the county’s Health Care Agency. (Fisher is stepping down soon too.) When asked why Bucholtz had decided to step down, Fisher said he didn’t know. But in a statement, the medical examiner did confirm that she has regretfully decided to move out of the county.

Bucholtz was appointed to the position in 2015 following the dismissal of Dr. John Smith. During her tenure, Bucholtz has been credited with key technological upgrades, including the implementation of a new cataloguing system for remains, as well as the re-examination of numerous old case files.

The county’s assistant chief medical examiner, Dr. Lawrence Nguyen, will now carry out M.E. duties until a permanent replacement is selected.
