L.A. County Hires New Interim Coroner

The troubled Los Angeles County Coroner’s Department has new temporarily leadership once again.

Almost one year after Medical Examiner-Coroner Dr. Mark Fajardo’s abrupt departure, the county’s chief of forensic medicine Dr. Christopher Rogers has been chosen as acting director. He will replace Dr. Lakshmanan Sathyavagiswaran, who took over on an interim basis last year. Meanwhile, the nationwide search for a permanent replacement goes on.

The department has been in a state of disarray for some time and is suffering from a crippling backlog of cases. Fajardo himself described the situation as “nuts.”

Dr. Rogers has been with the department for about 10 years and has performed a number of high-profile autopsies, including Michael Jackson’s in 2009.
