Calexit Rises From the Dead

Last time we checked in, California’s fanciful secessionist movement appeared to be dead in the water. But that was before the Comey firing. And the Russia meeting. And the Comey memo. And -- hold on, let me refresh my Twitter feed.

With the events of the past week sending the country into an absolute tailspin, #Calexit is once again trending among Trump-weary Californians. And now they’ve got a new group to carry the torch: the California Freedom Coalition (CFC).

CFC is headed by a number of liberal organizers including antiwar activist Cindy Sheehan, former University of California, Berkeley Professor Timothy Vollmer, and a principal manager at Think Big Analytics named Steve Gonzales. They were initially supporters of Yes California’s secessionist calls, but decided to form their own group once it became clear the organization was floundering.

"To be against something is exhausting," said Vollmer. "To be for something is exhilarating."

Unfortunately for Vollmer, the math still doesn’t add up
