Experts Perplexed as Dolphins Wash Up on Orange County Beaches
At least six dolphins have washed up on Orange County beaches in the span of just 14 days, leaving marine biologists questioning the possible existence of deadly toxins in local waters.
The Pacific Marine Mammal Center (PMMC) says it responded to half a dozen strandings between Feb. 4 and Feb. 18. It is currently investigating the cause. In addition to toxins, a viral or bacterial infection is also being considered.
The beachings have taken a toll on the organization.
“With so many incidents concentrated in such a short period of time, this has taken up much of the attention as well as our resources away from our more 'traditional' animal care operations focused on seals and sea lions," Peter Chang, CEO at PMC, said (NBC News).
