Stanislaus Pursuing Hemp Cultivation Pilot Program
Stanislaus County is embracing industrial hemp production even as a flurry of other counties move to ban the crop. County leaders recently directed staff to develop a one-year pilot program that would give some farmers experience growing hemp.
County Supervisor Jim DeMartini opposed the idea.
“There is no reason to rush into this,” he said.
But many farmers are eager to get in on what could be a highly lucrative industry. More than 50 potential growers have contacted Stanislaus’ agricultural commissioner to express interest, according to the Modesto Bee.
