Santa Clara County Deputy Public Defender Gored During Spain’s ‘Running of the Bulls’

A Santa Clara County public defender is recovering in a Spanish hospital after he was gored by a bull during the annual San Fermin festival in Pamplona.

“The joy and the excitement of being in the bullring quickly turned into a scare, into real fear for my life," said attorney Jaime Alvarez, as quoted by Spanish news station NBC 15

Alvarez had stopped in Pamplona on the way to his son’s soccer tournament which was being held in another city. His wife and daughter cautioned him to stay away from the area where the Running of the Bulls was taking place, but Alvarez says couldn’t resist. (Let this be a lesson to always listen to your wife.)

Alvarez ran most of the 913-yard course, according to NBC 15. Toward the end, he stopped to take a video selfie and that’s when horror struck. One of the bulls ran up to him and thrust its horn deep into his neck, fracturing his cheek bone and just barely missing a major artery.

Someone managed to pull Alvarez out of the animal’s path and likely saved his life. Paramedics rushed him to the hospital where he underwent a 2 1/2 hour surgery on Sunday. He is now in stable condition and expected to make a full recovery.

Hope the bull has a good defense attorney.
