He Dressed Up as a Deputy and Smuggled a McMuffin Into County Jail. Now He’s Investigating Public Corruption for the L.A. Sheriff’s Department.

For L.A. County Sheriff Alex Villanueva, questionable rehires seem to be more a feature than a bug.

First came the controversial rehiring of a deputy fired for domestic violence and stalking — a decision for which Villanueva was slapped down by the courts. Now, the sheriff has hired a homicide detective who was caught impersonating a deputy and smuggling contraband to a county jail inmate.

To be fair, the inmate swears the “contraband” was a McDonalds Egg McMuffin and coffee. But authorities say they never confirmed that’s what it was. Video of the incident is available here.

The investigator was suspended and barred from entering the facility. He is now investigating public corruption for LASD.

The department released the following statement Wednesday:

“Because this is an active ongoing murder investigation, we are unable to elaborate on this case. However, it should be noted that this individual is a retired L.A. County sheriff’s homicide detective who was working as one of the lead investigators for the D.A.'s office and that the alleged contraband in question taken into jail was a cup of black coffee and an Egg McMuffin.”
