Santa Clara Selects Monitor for County Jails
The Santa Clara County Jail and Sheriff’s Department will soon have new oversight, four years after the beating death of mentally ill inmate Michael Tyree.
On Tuesday, supervisors tapped Los Angeles-based OIR Group as the new Office of Correction and Law Enforcement Monitoring, The Mercury News reports. The firm worked with Fullerton after the police beating of Kelly Thomas and has served as Palo Alto’s independent police auditor for the past 13 years.
The Board of Supervisors voted to establish the office last year, heeding recommendations from a blue-ribbon commission established in the wake of Tyree’s death. Three correctional officers were sentenced to second-degree murder in that case.
