LASD Detective Killed in Tragic Accident

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department and the City of West Hollywood are mourning the loss of a 41-year-old sheriff’s detective who was struck and killed by a vehicle on Sunday

The accident occurred in Valley Village while Detective Amber Joy Leist was off duty. Leist witnessed a senior citizen fall at the crosswalk between Riverside Drive and Whitsett Avenue and stopped to help.

“While she was returning to her vehicle, she was struck by a vehicle traveling eastbound on Riverside Drive when the light had turned green," L.A. County Sheriff Alex Villanueva said in a statement.

Villanueva called her “an outstanding detective” known for a life of kindness, adding “we consider this an on-duty death.”

Leist was a 12-year veteran of the LASD and worked out of its West Hollywood station. She is survived by two sons, ages 17 and 20.
