NorCal Wolf That Captivated Biologists’ Attention Found Dead

Rest in peace, OR-54.

Officials with the state Department of of Fish and Wildlife have confirmed that a female gray wolf who traveled a total of 7,646 miles over 9 counties after crossing into the Golden State from Oregon has died. She was found last week in Shasta County.

The cause of OR-54’s death is unknown. Her demise, which follows the shooting death of another wolf in Modoc 14 months ago, is now under investigation.

OR-54’s wandering was so extensive that she has been called a “traveling maniac.” She was sired by OR-7, who became the first gray wolf to enter California in almost a century 9 years ago.
