These Areas Are Expected to See the Biggest Job Losses

Americans are grappling with two intense fears—one physical (their health) and the other economic.

Nationwide unemployment claims soared to 3.3 million last week, marking an all-time record high. California is averaging 106,000 jobless claims a day and an analysis by the Economic Policy Institute estimates that we could shed 600,000 private-sector jobs by summer as a result of the pandemic.

The Sacramento Bee has begun mapping these expected layoffs to give us an idea of which regions will be hardest hit. It shows big losses in San Diego (4.3% of jobs lost), San Bernardino (4.3% of jobs lost), the Sacramento MSA (4.2% of jobs lost), and Los Angeles (4% of jobs lost).

The Bee also breaks down expected losses by full-time, part-time, hourly, and seasonal employment.
