Butte County Sees Its First Coronavirus Death

Butte County saw its first coronavirus death this week after becoming one of the first counties to receive permission to reopen. The deceased was a person over the age of 65 with multiple underlying health conditions. Officials did not say how the person contracted COVID-19, other than confirming it was a case of community spread.

180 residents were recently quarantined after a local church opened its doors against county health orders and later discovered one of the attendants was positive for COVID-19. County health officials blasted the church's decision to reopen as reckless and irresponsible.

The county of 220,000 had reported 51 coronavirus cases as of Monday. Almost half of those were confirmed in the past 14 days, according to the Los Angeles Times.
