Santa Cruz Sheriff’s Sergeant Killed in ‘Ambush’
One Santa Cruz County sheriff’s deputy was killed and two others injured Saturday in what authorities have described as an “ambush.” On Sunday, the U.S. Air Force confirmed that an active duty sergeant stationed at Travis Air Force Base had been arrested on suspicion of the crime. The FBI and local police are also probing a possible link between the deputy’s death and the killing of a federal officer outside the U.S. courthouse in Oakland on May 29.
Sgt. Damon Gutzwiller, who was killed Saturday, was a member of the Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Department for 14 years.
“I will never forget him, I will always feel pain when I think about him, but I’ll also remember all the good things about him too,” said Jim Heart, Santa Cruz County Sheriff-Coroner, at a vigil held Sunday.
Gutzwillwer leaves behind a pregnant wife and a two-year-old son. A fund for the family has been set up by the sheriff’s department.
