California Becomes First State to Surpass 800,000 Coronavirus Cases

California has become the first state in the country to reach a total of 800,000 confirmed coronavirus cases. As of Sunday, there were 802,308 confirmed on the California Department of Health’s website. Johns Hopkins University’s tally showed the state reaching the 800,000 milestone on Friday.

On a positive note, California is seeing a decline in the positivity and hospitalization rate. California is not among the 22 states where the virus is currently on the rise. Hospitalizations dipped below 2,500 on Friday for the first time since April 4, according to the Sacramento Bee.

The state recently adopted a new color-coded tier system that guides public health restrictions. At least nine counties have already moved out of the most restrictive (purple) tier. To see the status of your county, click here.
