COVID-19 is the #1 Killer of On-Duty Police

The coronavirus pandemic has taken an immense toll on our first responders and public safety personnel. Over half of all line-of-duty deaths among U.S. law enforcement officers this year were caused by COVID-19, according to nonprofit organization OfficerDown.US.

So far in 2020, 182 officers have died in the line of duty, representing a 77% increase over the previous year. The most common causes were as follows:

4. Vehicular assault (7)

5. Struck by vehicle (6)

6. Heart attack (5)

7. Inadvertent gunfire (4)

8. Drowned (3)

9. 9/11 related cancer (3)

10. Motorcycle crash (2)

11. Vehicle pursuit (2)

12. Duty related illness (2)

13. Aircraft accident (1)
