Sonoma County DA to Face Recall

Another California district attorney is facing a recall effort — this time in Sonoma County. But unlike the campaigns targeting LA and San Francisco’s top prosecutors, the bid to get Jill Ravitch out of office appears to be highly personal.

As the Press Democrat reports, the campaign against Ravitch is being funded by a developer named Bill Gallaher. He has accused Ravitch of promoting racial injustice and failing to hold law enforcement accountable.

Ravitch and Gallagher have a history . Ravitch’s office filed a complaint against his company, Oakmont Senior Living, and two others for abandoning 100 elderly residents during the Tubbs fire in 2017. The company settled for $500,000. The recall campaign was launched two months later.

“At the end of the day, this recall attempt is about one simple fact: Bill Gallaher is mad we held his business accountable,” Ravitch told the Press Democrat.

But Gallagher’s effort has support. After $800,000 spent, the campaign has collected more than the necessary 30,056 valid signatures to put it on the ballot. A recall election could come as soon as September 14 and will cost the county $606,192 to $909,228.
