Ventura County Medical Examiner on Paid Leave Pending Investigation

The investigation is expected to take several months after reports of unauthorized procedures.

The allegations against Chief Medical Examiner Jon J. Smith include the performance of unauthorized postmortem procedures.

Investigators from the DA’s office and the California Medical Board searched medical examiner’s office on last Monday.

Smith was officially placed on paid administrative leave the next day.

The District Attorney alluded to a seizure of “significant documentary evidence.”

Smith also conducted work as a contract forensic pathologist for the Santa Barbara County Sheriff-Coroner. His duties there also included autopsies.
