First Flu Death of the Season Reported in Santa Clara County

California’s first flu death of the season has hit Santa Clara County, state health officials confirmed last week. The victim was a Santa Clara resident between the ages of 18 and 65.

“As California’s public health officer, I am troubled when the flu turns into loss of life,” California Department of Public Health Director Dr. Karen Smith said in a statement. “It doesn’t have to. That’s why I urge you to get your flu shot. By getting vaccinated, you can keep yourself healthy and stop the virus from spreading to others.”

Experts are urging the public to get vaccinated as soon as possible before the flu spreads. The season can begin as early as October and peaked last year in California around mid-January.

The 2014-2015 California flu season saw 78 deaths in those under the age of 65. It was considered moderately severe.
