Sonoma County Has Selected a New Human Services Director

A nationwide search for Sonoma County’s next Director of Human Services recently concluded with the selection of Karen Fies, who most recently served as the department’s assistant director. The Board of Supervisors announced Fies’ promotion September 13, with Board Chair Efren Carrillo lauding her knowledge, passion and an “innovative vision” for the future.

Fies has spent the past 30 years with the department, beginning as an eligibility worker in 1986. She holds a degree in Psychology from the University of California, Davis and a Masters of Public Administration from Sonoma State. As Director, she will oversee the department’s 930 employees and a budget of $325 million.

“I am deeply honored to be chosen as Sonoma County’s next Human Services Director,” Fies said. “My choice to pursue a career in this field reflects my strong passion for service, and my commitment to those in the community whose lives are changed by the assistance we provide. It will be a great privilege to continue this service as the Director of the Department I have dedicated my career to.”
