Riverside Appoints New Public Health Officer

Riverside County has abruptly removed and replaced its public health officer. Dr. Cameron Kaiser, who had served in the position since 2013, was let go last week. The County Board of Supervisors appointed Dr. Geoffrey Leung to replace him.

“I want to thank Dr. Kaiser for his tireless work throughout this pandemic in service to our residents, communities, county agencies, cities, school districts and many other groups,” said CEO Jeff Van Wagenen.

It is not clear what led to Dr. Kaiser’s dismissal, but he had received criticism for his public health orders during the pandemic. Supervisor Jeff Hewitt once accused him of "continuing a campaign of fear."

Leung has chaired Riverside County’s Family Medicine Department for the past nine years. He has been with the County since 2006. He has overseen the county’s COVID vaccination program since December.
