LA Supervisor Urges Crackdown on Illegal Cannabis

Illegal cannabis operations have been flourishing across the Antelope Valley. The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department uncovered 500 illegal cannabis grows worth $50 million dollars in Lancaster just weeks ago. The bust was the largest ever recorded in LASD history.

Now, Los Angeles Supervisor Kathryn Barger wants to see some changes at the state level. She introduced a motion Tuesday that would direct the county to seek six amendments to state law. These would include increasing criminal penalties for certain cannabis offenses; enabling the county to civilly prosecute water theft; getting stronger enforcement authority for water theft during declared drought emergencies; and authorizing County Counsel to civilly prosecute and enjoin water pollution for cannabis cultivation.

Barger also wants the county to pursue a nuisance abatement ordinance for unpermitted cannabis grows and dispensaries.
