LA Supes Vote to Take Vaccine Enforcement Out of Sheriff’s Hands

Los Angeles County Sheriff Alex Villanueva has refused to enforce the COVID-19 mandate for county employees. Last week, the Board of Supervisors responded by taking discretion out of the sheriff’s hands and allowing the county personnel director to discipline any employees who fail to comply with the requirement.

Villanueva blasted the decision as a “death blow” to public safety, saying it would result in the firing of 4,000 deputies.

“I can see why he wears a big hat, because he pulls a lot of numbers right out of it, most of which can’t be substantiated,” said Supervisor Sheila Kuehl, who authored the motion. “We’ve increased the people who work for him, we’ve increased the budget. And in this case, we have an absolute right to say these are our employees, not yours.”
