Airplane Heist Leaves San Mateo Sheriff’s Officials in Disbelief

A 50-year-old Miami resident stole a small plane from Palo Alto Airport on Thursday and then abandoned it on a beach in Half Moon Bay, around 25 miles west.

It’s one of the more bizarre heists in recent memory.

“I’ve been doing this a long time, this is for sure a first,” San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office Spokesperson Javier Acosta told the Los Angeles Times.

The red and white fixed-wing, single-engine aircraft was located Thursday evening on Poplar Beach, according to sheriff’s officials. The suspect, Luiz Gustavo Aires, is being charged with theft of an airplane and misappropriation of lost property.
