Man Killed by Mountain Lion in El Dorado County

One man was killed and another injured by a mountain lion Saturday in a rural part of El Dorado County, sheriff’s officials said.

The victims were brothers, ages 18 and 21. They encountered the cougar while searching for antler sheds in an area known as Georgetown at around 1 p.m.

The 18-year-old sustained grave injuries, but is expected to survive. The 21-year-old was discovered dead at the scene with the mountain lion next to his body. Deputies fired their guns to get the animal to move away. It ran off but was later found and euthanized.

Mountain lion attacks are rare. Since 1986, there have been 22 attacks on humans in California, four of which were deadly. The last fatal attack from a California mountain lion occurred 20 years ago in Orange County.
