A Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputy is facing felony charges for allegedly smuggling drugs into the North County Correctional Facility in Castaic.

The sheriff’s department has confirmed that Michael Meiser, 39, had been arrested last week.

“The Department’s Internal Criminal Investigation Bureau initiated an investigation into the allegations involving an employee,” the statement read. “We arrested the employee on April 30th for felony charges. The employee is relieved of duty pending the outcome of the case.”

According to the Los Angeles Times, Meiser worked for the North County Correctional Facility’s anti-gang unit, known as Operation Safe Jails. He was reportedly caught smuggling heroin into the facility after he was placed under surveillance.
